Why Conjur?

If you're an engineer who loves creating wonderful experiences for your users, interacting with fellow nerds, and working in a startup, Conjur should be on your shortlist.

We're a fast-growing tech startup, thanks to the increasing success of our product: the Conjur appliance secures the entire software development and deployment lifecycle for companies who want to ship features as fast as possible without increasing their risk of security breaches. It does this by seamlessly identifying machines, devices, applications, and people - and then securely managing all the sensitive data like passwords and API keys that they need to operate.

We're headquartered in the metro Boston area. We would prefer to hire local candidates who can work from our office, but if you're a remote applicant and you really want to be considered, you might be able to convince us.

Conjur Engineering

Conjur Engineering is a place where engineers love to practice their craft.

We try our best to make our working environment as engineer-friendly as possible. Even though startup life is fast-paced, we don't crush ourselves with endless hours of work. We want engineers here to still have time to think, create, and innovate. We are technicians who care about our craft, our tools, technical debt, the diversity of our industry, and each other. Engineers succeed at Conjur if they care about the same things.

Given that we're in the security industry, our product has to be very carefully developed to be made bulletproof against attack. That's a threshold of quality that most engineers have never had to meet, so we invest in training and professional development of our team members to make sure that they can meet that standard.

Our development team is organized into small 3-person squads, and each squad is tasked with producing at least one value-adding deliverable each day. At the end of each weekly sprint, the squads present their finished work to others in the company to get feedback, and then ship those features and fixes. We work fast, and we thrive on the Lean Startup ethos of development.

We focus deeply on our flow and velocity as a team. We carefully monitor our own cycle time, lead time, daily velocity, and weekly sprint velocity. You can think of it as a Scrumban model, since we take inspiration from both Scrum and Kanban. We are always on the lookout for critical paths, chokepoints, and constraints, and we love to remove them when they're discovered.

We practice Experience-Driven Development (XDD), a technique we've pioneered that helps our underlying agile process focus more clearly on the product experiences we want to deliver to our users.

We strive to create lovable products that are more than just a bunch of stories that someone happened to decide to package up and ship.

XDD is based on the following:

  1. Designing the experience first, and guiding everything in development with it
  2. Getting early and frequent feedback on end-to-end functionality (no matter how crude or "unshippable" that implementation may be)
  3. Moving away from a conveyor belt of "potentially shippable product features" to "an increasingly awesome end-to-end experience"

Come talk to us about XDD. There's so much more to it than is listed here, and we'd love to hear your opinions on it.

The Passionate Engineers We're Looking For

We're looking for engineers who:

  • Care deeply about crafting delightful user experiences
  • Love having reliable, trusted tools at their disposal
  • Want to learn something new every single day
  • Enjoy working in a Lean environment
  • Favor rapid feedback cycles over a desire to get things "perfect"
  • Build automated tests without breaking into sweat at the thought
  • Can thrive in a startup

We give bonus points for engineers who know how to write secure web applications and instinctively protect their code against the top OWASP vulnerabilities. We're a security-focused company, so you can probably understand why we care about that. But if you've never worked in the security world before, we'll make sure you get any training and mentoring you need, and we know you'll end up loving it.

Most importantly, we want to hire engineers who have a burning passion to build, improve, learn, and have fun while doing so.

Interviewing at Conjur is fun! We love meeting fellow technologists and geeking out. We're very friendly and make lots of awful jokes.

After our fun hiring puzzle, interviewing will involve a phone call or hangout, then an in-person interview. Importantly, we only hire people who show that they can actually deliver quality software, so you can choose to either work on a small homework assignment and wow us with the results, or proudly walk us through a project that you had built before (and is relevant to this position, of course!).

Applying to an Engineering position at Conjur is a little different, but way more fun than what you'd expect. By solving a fun puzzle, you'll discover the secret instructions for applying.
